Seiko 2nd Generation Orange Monster with new 24-Jewel Automatic Movement #SRP315K1

The Seiko Superior SRP309 is the new, second generation Orange Monster dive watch.

It retains the essentials of the original such as the Seiko rubber dive strap, case and bezel, while changing the dial slightly and going with a new 24-jewel Seiko caliber 4R36 automatic (self-winding) movement. You will notice right away that the hour markers are shaped like shark teeth instead of the original mostly rectangular shapes. The inner sixty minute markings are no longer displayed making for a cleaner, less cluttered look.

The biggest change is on the inside. The watch is now powered by a new 24-jewel caliber 4R36 movement which now can be hacked and hand wound. Hacking is handy for synchronizing the watch with another timepiece. Just unscrew the crown. Pull it out to the 2nd position and the second hand will stop while you set the time. Hand winding lets you power up the watch manually after it has sat unworn for a few days. The movement is more accurate also compared to the caliber 7S26 used in the first Monster.

The powerful Seiko LumiBrite luminescent material is of course still used and it retains the same brilliant glowing properties that made the Orange Monster such a huge worldwide phenomenon with watch enthusiasts and scuba divers. It is a very slightly different shade of blue-green this time. Still an awesome sight in the dark after charging it with a bright light source. You will also notice a new nicely machined crown that is a bit easier to grip than the previous version.

Lug width is 20mm. Case size is 43mm. Slightly domed Hardlex mineral crystal. Concave black PVD dive bezel to help protect the crystal. Seiko rubber dive strap with a buckle clasp. Solid screw-in case back. Water resistant to 200 meters. Day and date window. New black chapter ring. It's a fantastic bargain.

Pretty good quality on an interesting design

I own several watches in higher price tiers (Omega, Longines, Steinhart, etc.), but Seiko ranks among the best. There's an indisputable value in their quality vs. price, and the SRP315 is no exception. Pics 3 and 6 best show the color of the watch, and those familiar with Seiko know that their lume is unequalled. The PVD coated bezel is well-applied, and the partial shroud on the case should prevent major scratching or chipping. Drilled lugs make strap swaps easy, and the movement holds great time so far. Quips are minor: Mine has the smallest speck of dust on the dial, visible only with focus. The bezel has minor back-play, though not enough to negate its utility when diving. Case finishing on the shroud is a touch sharp on the edge, and the rubber strap is a bit stiff. Still the watch still punches well above its weight class in the quality. Delivery from Long Island Watch was quick and the watch well-packed. As well, Marc is always quick to respond and provide information.

Great service, but a few quirks to the movement

Great service from Marc, but I'm thinking Seiko's QC on the new 4R15 is a little irregular; the one I received has consistently run 25 - 35 secs fast per day. Marc has been helpful, and will be taking the watch for regulation.
