Islander Aviator Automatic Watch with Leather Strap and an Anti-Reflective Sapphire Crystal #ISL-45

Islander Aviator Automatic Watch with Leather Strap and an Anti-Reflective Sapphire Crystal #ISL-45

The new Islander ISL-45 is an Aviator-Pilot style watch with a Type-A dial. The case is a very wearable 42mm in diameter and it is just 12mm thick. Lug to lug (or tip to tip) measurement is 48mm. The screw-in case back has the silhouette of an F-14 fighter jet etched into it. The iconic F-14 was manufactured by the Grumman company on Long Island and it was featured in the movie Top Gun.

Inside the case is an NH35, 24-jewel automatic movement with 21,600 vibrations per hour. This self-winding movement supports hand winding and hacks (seconds hand stops when you pull out the crown). Power reserve is about 41 hours fully wound. The NH35 also has date wheel viewed at 3:00 on the dial.

The black dial has SuperLuminova on the sword-style hands and hour makers. The dial is unbranded like many of the vintage WWII offerings. The Islander ISL-45 features a Type-A dial with a clearly marked 60-minute scale and Arabic numerals except at 12:00 where a triangle with dots is used. The hour hand, minute hand, and dial markings are all treated with C3 SuperLuminova. The seconds hand is painted blue.
You will note that the dial has excellent visibility due to the use of an anti-reflective sapphire crystal that also guards against scratches.

This model comes with a black leather strap with matching stitching. The buckle is signed (i.e. Islander logo). You can change up the look with a military-style nylon strap and any of our leather straps. The lug width is 22mm.

The ISL-45 aviator watch features a screw down crown which provides a water resistance rating of 100 meters.

Handsome flieger at a great price

Posted by Vince on Aug 14th 2021

Just got this for my birthday. It's a flieger style type A watch. My only gripe about it is that for how simplistic the watch is, it seems a bit thick. That actually seems true for a lot of Flieger watches, not just this one, so maybe its part of the style. This page is a pretty good point of comparison: http://fliegerfriday.com/flieger-friday-modern-pilot-watches-with-sterile-dial/ You can see that many of those cost an awful lot more than this one, but none of them (from the pictures) scream out that they are way better than the Islander. The Islander has a lot going for it on paper. The movement isn't fancy but isn't lacking in features. The materials are all top notch and fit the bill unless you want a titanium case. The thick leather strap is very satisfying. As for the finer details, the crystal is raised about 1mm above the steel case with a taper to match the taper of the case. If you look in the picture, you can see the minute markers showing through in the taper of the crystal. Its a nice touch that adds some playful glint and the lume shows through there as well. The full lume of all the markers and hands is very impressive. The engraving on the back adds some history to the watch for this otherwise very young brand. I'm not the biggest fan of the Islander logo on the dial of some of the other watches, but on the crown I think its really great. It's a logo that fits much better on the crown in my opinion. I also like the blue second hand, which I feel gives it just a spot of character to make it feel like it's more than just a generic Flieger watch, while still staying very true to the style. It fits comfortably on the wrist. All in all, I'm very happy with the watch, and I'm very grateful to have some high quality buying options at this price.

    Overall very pleased

Overall what a great watch. Love the blue seconds hand. Was a bargain at the sale price. One minor niggle - the sapphire glass is very smudgy and takes a lot of oils and fingerprints very easily. Any smudging is quite noticeable

    Islander ISL-45

Received my watch all the way over in the UK with really quick delivery - excellent service. As for the watch itself, I'm amazed at what you get for the money. I had been looking at the likes of Stowa and SINN for a flieger type watch, but after reading the positive reviews, i took a punt. The likes of Stowa must be making significant profits on their watches (guess you pay a lot for the name) . Perfect size for 7" wrist, clean dial, ar, sapphire, comfortable, with a date complication (+ve for me) , decent movement - excellent. I think I got the last one too. I hope they can make one with a copper case and clear back in the future. Well done Island Watch and thank you!

    ISL-45 a winner

I really like this pilot watch! Everyone has different opinions on watch straps; I really like this strap it's nice and thick and very comfortable. The 42mm size is fine for my 7 inch wrist. It's a very masculine but also a very easy to read watch. It looks a lot more expensive than it is. I like the blue second hand. I have one B dial so this A dial was a good choice for me. LIW shipped it very quickly. I cannot imagine a better pilot watch for the price.

    Great value, great service

Impossible to find a better price for all the features and the decent movement this watch has. Lume is also impressive for not being a diver. Fits exceptionally well on my 7" wrist due to the curved lugs. The blue second hand on this version gives the face a sliver of personality without interfering with or distracting from the sterile dial. Had to switch out the rather uncomfortable strap, but if it works for you, be aware if you plan to add a deployant clasp that it tapers down to 20mm at the buckle end. Service was excellent also. I notified Marc and the sales team of an issue, which they addressed within a few hours, and resolved by the end of the same day.

Best affordable quality aviator watch around

Posted by Marko Kloos on Feb 1st 2021

This is a delightful aviator style watch that has everything I was looking for in a flyer. Clean and sterile Type A dial, AR sapphire crystal, hacking and hand-winding movement, and a sturdy leather strap. I could do without the date window, but that's a minor quibble. And the blue seconds hand is just a nice little detail that adds just the right amount of visual flair.

    Excellent Brush Work

Posted by Dar on Jan 15th 2021

For $199 this is something else, the metal brush work on this watch is nothing short of excellent for its price point, I have some $500 and up watches where the brush work is not as good as this $199 piece. My only minor complaint and most would see this as a plus would be the 22m lug width, I think should have been 20 and if you purchase a Haveston strap for this you will see why I say this. Other than that more than pleased. Value for dollar and aesthetics and build quality can not be beat.

    Precisely what I wanted

Posted by Josh on Jan 12th 2021

I had been on the hunt for a sterile dial flieger with a date window for awhile, and had almost resigned myself to not being able to find one. Enter Marc at Long Island Watch. I got the A dial, which I preferred over the B. I didn't notice that I ordered the version with a blue seconds hand until after the fact, but I really like the pop of color on the dial, I prefer this over the standard white. The flat sapphire is perfect, it's low-profile and far harder than mineral glass, and is a great addition at this price point. Looking for faults on this watch is hard. One nit-pick I have is that I think a black date wheel with white text would have provided more visual continuity, but that isn't enough of a downside for me to vote it any less than Excellent. As for shipping, I ordered it shortly before Christmas, and it arrived before Christmas. I'll be a repeat customer of this site and of Islander Watches, Marc has a keen eye for detail with the watches he's making.
