The two tone Orient Star Retrograde watch is powered by an Orient made 40A50, 22-jewel automatic (self-winding) movement that can be hand wound and has hacking capability. It has a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating and a power reserve of 40 hours which can be monitored via a meter at 12:00 on the dial. It has a retrograde mechanism (day of the week hand). The word "retrograde" literally means a return to the starting point. The unique mechanism makes the hand return to the starting point in an instant, from the Sunday to Monday position, when a week has elapsed. The date is shown in a sub-dial at 9:00.

The beautifully decorated Orient Star movement and rotor can be seen in action via an exhibition window case back. The yellow goldtone hour and minute hands have been cut in peak shape and feature different finishes on the two sides : matte and mirror finish. The hands and hour dots are treated with a luminous material for telling time in the dark. The watch comes with a high grade, two-tone Orient Star stainless steel bracelet with a dual push-button deployant clasp. It is a beautiful timepiece with a gorgeous textured white dial.

    Beautiful fit and finish. Detailed dial is subtle, but provides depth and texture. Face is a good size. Large enough to be noticeable and easily read, but not gaudy. The crown action is smooth and precise. Time accuracy is great. I set it a week ago and have gained about a minute over that time (+/- 9 sec per day). Bracelet is comfortable and watch is not too heavy. Case is relatively thick, but I believe that is somewhat expected in a mechanical watch with these complications. Love the hacking and hand winding features, but I have not used the hand winding other than when it came out of the box. Normal movement during wear easily maxes out the power reserve in about 1/2 a day. I let it sit most of the weekend and put in on Monday morning with less than 10 hours indicated. It was full shortly after lunch. Great efficiency in the self winding. I was looking at the Classic Orient Star, but am happy I went with this model. Really an extreme value in mechanical watches.

    I am pleased with my orient star retrograde watch. It has a feel of quality about it and I like the the display. I do however find the watch a little heavy but overall I am happy with the purchase especially at the discounted price Island watch offered it at.
