Seagull 1963 Hand Wind Mechanical Chronograph with Acrylic Crystal #6345A-2901

This special edition watch is an official remake of the 1963 Chinese Airforce chronograph, a unique and classic masterpiece now coveted by collectors nearly as much as the original. This new updated version has a 38mm polished stainless steel case with a retro acrylic crystal (front) and an exhibition window back. The gold tint creme dial features goldtone numbers and markers and a red star under the 12:00 position. 19 ZUAN on the dial indicates the movement has 19-jewels. The movement is a Seagull No. ST19 mechanical (hand winding) chronograph with 21,600 VPH and shock protection. Power reserve is about 45 hours on a full wind without the chronograph running.

The Seagull chronograph uses a column wheel. In this design, the key component is a small rotating cylinder with teeth at the top, not unlike a castle turret. As the chronograph buttons are pressed, the column wheel rotates and levers fall in between the teeth to drive the functions. The column wheel movement is considered by most watch enthusiasts to be the most desirable, since it requires the greatest skill to design and build correctly and it is thought to be the most durable.

The sub-dial on the left is the running seconds counter and the sub-dial on the right is a 30-minute timer. The red seconds hand is activated when you click the pusher at 2:00. The outer portion of the black dial is marked in seconds. The watch comes with a olive green NATO-Style strap.

This watch is fantastic. There's a ton of reviews of this online so won't bore you with those details. What was way better than this watch was the customer service! Emails responded quickly and Marc's 'customer satisfaction first' mentality is great. Will be looking forward to more purchases from IslandWatch.

So Worth It October 15, 2018

Gorgeous watch. The detailing on the dial is wonderful and finely executed, with pleasing proportions (nicer than the 42mm version, I think). And then there is the movement: the ST19 is an upgraded version of the Swiss Venus Cal. 175, tooling and blueprints having been sold to the Tianjin Watch Co. in the early 60s. Toss the cheap NATO strap this watch ships with and replace it with a nicer strap or bracelet, so you can fully enjoy the movement visible through the exhibition case-back. The pusher action is fantastic: the Cal. 175 was known for its gentle reset, and the Chinese-built version doesn't disappoint - a light press on the top pusher snaps the chrono hand smartly back to the 12 position. I could do this all day...

If you are a movement geek or any kind of geek at all, you will appreciate this fine Swiss-designed column-wheel chronometer, at a fraction of the cost of its Swiss nephews (I'm looking at you, Sellita SW500).

Beautiful chronograph watch September 19, 2018
Reviewer: K Ablan from Philippines
The watch itself came as expected. It is my first chronograph and it is a beautiful watch. There were no issues with the movement, as I was worried I might have to send them back for replacement, which would be difficult because I had the watch delivered to the Philippines. So I’m glad the watch works!
My only gripe is on the lack of packaging (it’s superficial, really). It could have come with a product manual, or some protective plastic seal for the acrylic crystal.
Still, the watch is pretty. It’s affordable. And it works! Thanks!
